Resolved Question: What's a good first time snake?

I want a snake when I move into my first apartment. What's a good breed that likes being handled and doesn't eat live mice? There is a good cornsnake breeder here. Would that be ok? Also, tell me what I need to know about owning it. Please someone answer that actually knows what they're talking about.
